Sergeant Kyle Smith and his devoted German Shepherd partner, Bodza, shared a remarkable bond forged during their service in the US Air Force. Bodza, a skilled bomb detector since 2006, played a crucial role in saving lives by detecting explosives. Their partnership began in 2012, and over the years, a deep friendship blossomed between them.
The Soldier and His Loyal Companion
Reflecting on their time together, Smith expressed the profound impact Bodza had on him. “I loved working with him because he taught me a lot – patience as a young handler, and how to understand that this job isn’t just about you,” shared Smith with The Dodo.
Transitioning to Retirement and Adoption
As Bodza’s retirement approached, Smith decided to adopt his loyal companion. The bond they shared on duty seamlessly transitioned into a loving relationship at home. Bodza’s loyalty extended beyond the workplace, as he followed Smith everywhere and shared nightly rituals of bidding him goodnight.
Facing a Heartbreaking Diagnosis
The joy of retirement turned bittersweet when, in the summer of 2016, Bodza was diagnosed with degenerative myelopathy—an incurable disease affecting a dog’s spinal cord. The once vibrant canine began to lose control of his hind limbs, leading Smith to make the difficult decision to put Bodza down.
A Soldier’s Heart-Wrenching Decision
In a touching display of love and respect, Smith, accompanied by nine co-workers, took Bodza to the Fort Bliss Vet Clinic in El Paso, Texas. Placed on a blanket, Bodza peacefully passed away in the arms of his devoted owner.
Final Moments of Comfort and Support
Smith shared the overwhelming emotions of the moment, expressing gratitude for the support of his co-workers. “They let me sob like a baby. They patted me on the back and reassured me it was going to be all right,” recounted Smith. His boss draped a flag over Bodza, providing a poignant final moment of honor.
A Peaceful Crossing of the Rainbow Bridge
Bodza’s passing, though heartbreaking, held a moment of solace. Smith noted, “He had a smile on his face when he was getting put to sleep.” The loyal K-9 partner crossed the rainbow bridge, leaving behind cherished memories of selflessness and unwavering loyalty.
