The poignant lyrics were written by Dave Turnbull and Jeremy Spillman, and the song was released in June 2005 as part of Adkins’ album Songs About Me. It was the second single from the album.

“Arlington” is a tribute to Corporal Patrick Nixon, a soldier from Tennessee who was killed in an ambush in Iraq on March 23, 2003, while serving in the United States Marine Corps.

Adkins shared that he had been searching for the right song to honor fallen servicemen and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. He explained that “Arlington” was a non-political, respectful tribute that didn’t glorify war but instead paid homage to those who gave everything for the values the nation holds dear.

Billboard’s Deborah Evans Price praised how Adkins’ deep, resonant baritone voice perfectly conveys the emotion and story behind the song, describing it as “the perfect vehicle for this hauntingly beautiful song about sacrifice, honor, and the cost of freedom.”
