Man builds new home for homeless woman forced to sleep in dirt for a decade – thanks for your kindness.

Not many people take the time to connect with a homeless individual and learn about their journey to living on the streets.

Yet, a hero in Los Angeles got to know the homeless woman staying outside his house and took incredible action to help her.

Irene “Smokie” McGee has been living on the streets of south Los Angeles for the past ten years, ever since her husband died and she lost her home.

The 60-year-old woman slept on the ground at night and collected recycling during the day to sell for food.

She spent the majority of her nights camping outside an apartment complex, where a resident became acquainted with her and learned her story.

“She’s a human being, a 60-year-old mother and grandmother sleeping in the dirt, it’s just not right,” said resident Elvis Summers.

Elvis and Irene became friends, so the young man chose to construct a house for Irene because he couldn’t stand seeing her sleep on the streets every night.

The kind neighbor built her a house with $500 worth of wood he bought, siding and roofing given by a local business, and his own building abilities.

“I just wanted to build something safe enough and secure enough so she’d be warm and comfortable.”

Irene got a roof over her head after only five days.

“It felt so good, I was so relaxed, I think I must have slept half the day,” Irene described her experience of the initial evening she spent in her recently acquired 3.5 ft by 8 ft residence.

Elvis truly embodies the qualities of a hero! In order to inspire others to lend a helping hand to those who are less fortunate, please spread the word..
