Mom hears son has been bullying classmates – her controversial punishment has the internet split in two

Bullying is a universally condemned issue, yet it remains a deeply entrenched problem within society.

It is crucial to instill in children from a young age that bullying, in any form, is intolerable, a principle that many parents and educators diligently work to reinforce.

Nevertheless, completely eradicating bullying is nearly impossible. So, what actions should be taken when a child is discovered to be bullying others? One mother from Texas employed a rather contentious approach to discipline her son after learning that he had referred to his classmates as “idiots” and “stupid.” This mother, identified only as Star, has sparked significant debate online with her chosen method of reprimand.

As per British newspaper The Daily Star, the mom wanted to stamp out her son’s behavior and, having grown tired of his antics, conjured her own form of rebuke.

She told ABC13 that she was an “old-school parent” who believes in strong morals.

“I don’t coddle my children. I don’t sugar-coat the world to them,” she said.

Star chose a unique approach to address her son’s behavior rather than merely reprimanding him or instructing him to apologize to the children he had affected. She dressed him in a t-shirt that proclaimed “I AM A BULLY” and took photographs of him before school, which she subsequently shared on Facebook for public viewing.

This decision has elicited a variety of reactions. While many support her method of imposing a severe consequence, others argue that she may have overstepped appropriate boundaries.

In an effort to clarify her intentions, Star explained to ABC13 that her motivation for posting on Facebook was not to humiliate her son, but rather to connect with the parents of the children he may have bullied, allowing for personal apologies to be made.

Although she later deleted the post in response to the negative feedback, she remains firm in her stance.

“I wanted to understand what he took away from this experience, and he expressed, ‘I learned that I didn’t like the way that felt, and I don’t want anyone else to feel that way because of me. That’s precisely the lesson I aimed for him to learn.”

Experts believe Star’s actions could do more harm than good, but the mom herself claims that her son has already been behaving better.

“He’ll survive. And he’s already been treating his sisters better. He’s already been treating his cousins better. He learned from it. That’s all that matters,” she said.

Star’s actions may be deemed controversial; however, if her son has shown improvement in his behavior, it is possible that he has acquired a valuable lesson that all children must learn eventually.
