Around the world, too many dogs suffer mistreatment and neglect. Thankfully, many compassionate rescuers are committed to helping animals in need.
When Sabine, a rescuer from Little Steps Matter, and her colleague came across an extremely malnourished dog tied to a pole, her head buried in a trash bag as she desperately searched for food, they were heartbroken. Approaching the pup, they were relieved to see she wasn’t afraid of them. As they untied her and lifted her out of her misery, they couldn’t hold back their tears, knowing her suffering would finally end.
The rescuers named her Lisa. From her poor condition, they could tell she’d been neglected for a long time. “It was so cruel that somebody left her behind like this, tying her up so she couldn’t follow them,” Sabine told The Dodo.
Rushing Lisa to the vet, they discovered she was severely dehydrated, suffering from mange, and in the early stages of cancer. The medical team put her on an IV for hydration and kept her under observation around the clock.
Just two days later, Lisa showed signs of recovery, wagging her tail and greeting her caregivers with more energy. After five days, she was well enough to leave the clinic and move to a safe house.
Arriving at her new home, Lisa was initially overwhelmed by the love and care she received. Unaccustomed to kindness, she seemed unsure of what to do. Yet, over time, she began to realize that this was her new, rightful life. Her mood lifted, and she grew visibly happier each day, her eyes bright with joy.
In just ten days, Lisa transformed. She gained weight, and her coat began to grow back. Four weeks later, she was declared cancer-free. Stronger and more confident, she started playing with other dogs. Though initially shy around the group, her gentle new friends helped her feel at home, and soon, she blossomed into a playful, affectionate dog.
Today, Lisa is a different dog—full of energy, she loves running around, especially on the beach, and enjoys being with people. Now about a year old, this small mixed-breed pup is a little shy at first but quickly warms up once she feels safe.
Lisa is ready for a forever home. “Lisa is a miracle dog, and she deserves the very best,” says Sabine. If you or someone you know is interested in adopting this sweet, resilient pup, please contact Little Steps Matter.
