Ruben’s story began in Romania, where life was anything but easy for a puppy born with a congenital disability.

His unique condition made it nearly impossible for him to fend for himself, and the odds of finding a home were slim. But fate had something special in store for him.

British charity Safe Rescue for Dogs, known for its tireless efforts in rescuing abandoned and at-risk canines, found Ruben just in time.

Recognizing his resilience and loving nature, they saved him from an uncertain fate and brought him to the UK, where his life was about to change forever.

 

Finding a Forever Home

One of the many people touched by Ruben’s story was Karen Stanway, a 31-year-old veterinary nurse and devoted animal lover.

Even before meeting him in person, Karen felt an unshakable connection to the little pup.

His picture on an adoption advert tugged at her heartstrings, and she knew she had to give him the home he so desperately needed.

When Ruben arrived at his new home, it was as if he had always belonged there. Karen, alongside her other dog, Ally, welcomed him with open arms.

 

Despite his physical challenges, Ruben wasted no time in settling in, his tail wagging with joy as he explored his new surroundings.

Overcoming Challenges with a Wagging Tail

Life with Ruben has been filled with joy, but it hasn’t been without its difficulties.

Walking on only his hind legs, Ruben has to expend twice the energy to keep up with other dogs.

Karen quickly realized that his unusual way of moving took a toll on his body, causing him to tire out quickly.

 

Determined to make life easier for him, she sprang into action. Before he even arrived, she had already started planning ways to accommodate his needs, installing ramps and making adjustments to her home.

But despite her best efforts, it was clear that Ruben needed more than just a loving home—he needed a set of wheels.

The Road to a New Beginning

 

Understanding that mobility is crucial for Ruben’s happiness and well-being, Karen set up a crowdfunding campaign to raise funds for a custom-made wheelchair.

Unlike ordinary pet accessories, specialized wheelchairs for dogs like Ruben require careful design and adjustments to ensure comfort and proper support.

Though Ruben doesn’t know that he is any different from other dogs, the right set of wheels would give him newfound freedom, allowing him to run, explore, and play without limitations.

With an initial goal of £500, Karen hoped that compassionate animal lovers would help contribute to changing Ruben’s life.

Facing Judgment and Rising Above It

Unfortunately, not everyone sees Ruben’s indomitable spirit in the same light. Karen has faced criticism from strangers who don’t understand why a dog like Ruben wasn’t simply put down.

It’s a cruel reality that some people view animals with disabilities as burdens rather than beings deserving of love and care.

“When we take him out, people give us dirty looks sometimes,” Karen admitted. “I’ve even heard someone say under their breath that he should have been put to sleep.

But they don’t know Ruben. They don’t see how happy he is. He doesn’t think he’s different. He just wants to live, play, and be loved.”

Despite the negativity, Karen remains firm in her belief that every animal, no matter their condition, deserves a chance at happiness.

And Ruben, with his unbreakable spirit, continues to prove that he is worthy of all the love and care in the world.

Though his journey has been tough, Ruben’s days are now filled with love, play, and adventure. He adores spending time with Ally, hopping around the house, and snuggling up to Karen.
